Group 1- the alkali metals Flashcards
1
Q
What is group 1 referred to as?
A
The alkali metals.
2
Q
What happens to the alkali metals as you go down group 1?
A
- They become more reactive.
- They have lower melting and boiling points.
- They have low density (first three are less dense than water).
3
Q
What are the elements called in group 1?
A
- Lithium
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Rubidium
- Caesium
- Francium
4
Q
What do the alkali metals form with non-metals?
A
Ionic compounds.
5
Q
Why can’t alkali metals form covalent bonds?
A
Because they don’t share electrons and are keen to lose their outer electron to form a 1+ ion (they form ionic bonds).
6
Q
What do alkali metals produce?
A
White compounds that dissolve in water to form colourless solutions.
7
Q
When Lithium, Sodium or Potassium react with water what do they do?
A
- They react vigorously.
- They float and move around the surface, fizzing furiously.
- They produce hydrogen gas.
8
Q
How can you test for H2?
A
Potassium is hot enough to ignite it, a lighted splint will indicate hydrogen by producing a “squeaky pop”.
