Q

What happens to the alkali metals as you go down group 1?

A
  • They become more reactive.
  • They have lower melting and boiling points.
  • They have low density (first three are less dense than water).

Q

Why can’t alkali metals form covalent bonds?

A

Because they don’t share electrons and are keen to lose their outer electron to form a 1+ ion (they form ionic bonds).

Q

When Lithium, Sodium or Potassium react with water what do they do?

A
  • They react vigorously.
  • They float and move around the surface, fizzing furiously.
  • They produce hydrogen gas.

Q

How can you test for H2?

A

Potassium is hot enough to ignite it, a lighted splint will indicate hydrogen by producing a “squeaky pop”.
