Group 2 chemistry Flashcards
How does 1st ionisation energy change down group 2?
It decreases.
-Electron shielding increases
-Outer electron feels weaker attraction from nucleus
-Outer electron requires less energy to remove
How does melting point change down group 2?
It decreases (except for Mg’s which is lower than expected)
-Radius increases
-Distance between nucleus and sea of delocalised electrons increases
-Weaker attraction keeping ions in the lattice which requires less energy to break
Write the general equation for reaction of Ca, Sr or Ba with water.
M(s) + 2H₂O(l) → M(OH)₂(s) + H₂(g)
What is unique about Mg’s reaction with H₂O?
It can only react with steam
Which element in group 2 will only react with steam?
Mg
Write an equation for the reaction of Mg with H₂O
Mg(s) + H₂O(g) → MgO(s) + H₂(g)
(Mg only reacts with steam)
Give observations for the reaction of Mg with H₂O
Bright white flame producing a white solid (MgO)
Explain why a clean strip of Mg will react slowly with liquid water.
Unclean Mg has a layer of MgO surrounding it which does not react with water
Cleaning it with sandpaper exposes the pure Mg
How is Mg used to extract titanium from rutile?
TiO₂ + 2Cl₂ + 2C → TiCl₄ + 2CO
TiCl₄ + 2Mg → Ti + 2MgCl₂
MG is used as a reducing agent as using C would produce brittle TiC.
How does the solubility of hydroxides change down group 2?
It increases
Mg(OH)₂ is insoluble
Ba(OH)₂ is soluble
Give a use of Mg(OH)₂in medicine
Milk of magnesia, neutralises excess stomach acid
What compound is used to neutralise excess stomach acid?
Mg(OH)₂
(Milk of magnesia)
Give a use of Ca(OH)₂ in agriculture
Used to neutralise acidic soils
What compound is used to neutralise acidic soils in agriculture?
Ca(OH)₂
How are CaO and CaCO₃ used to remove acidic flue gases (SO₂) from coal burning?
CaO + SO₂ → CaSO₃
CaCO₃ + SO₂ → CaSO₃ + CO₂
