Group 1 Elements Flashcards
What are group 1 elements ?
Alkali metals
What is the same about them ?
One electron in their outer shell
What dos it mean having 1 electron in their outer shell ?
Very reactive
Alkali metal properties are…
Soft
Low density
Trends for alkali metals as you go down the group is
They increase in reactivity as the outer electron is more easily lost
The attraction between the nucleus and electron decrease because he electron gets further away from the nucleus as you go down the group
Low Mekong and boiling points
High relative atomic mass
What do alkali metals form with non-metals ?
Ionic compounds as heh don’t need much energy to lose their outer electron
Form 1+ ions
What happens when group 1 metals are out in water ?
React vigorously and produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides
What happens with reactivity when you go down group 1 ?
The amount of energy given out by the reaction increases
What’s different between group 1 metals and transition metals ?
They are more reactive and react more vigorously with water, oxygen and group 7 elements.
Less dense strong and hard than transition metals.
Have much lower boiling points
