Q

Explain the trend in reactivity in Group 1

A
  • As you go down group 1, the number of shells of electrons increases by 1
  • The outermost electron gets farther away from the nucleus, so there are weaker forces of attraction between the outermost electron and the nucleus
  • Therefore, less energy is required to overcome the forces of attraction as it gets weaker, so the outer electron is lost more easily

Q

Explain why potassium is more reactive than lithium

A
  • loses its outer electron more easily considering it is further from the nucleus and less strongly attracted to it.

Q

State two similarities and two differences between the reactions of lithium and potassium with water

A

Similarities: - they both fizz
- Forms a solution

Differences: - Hydrogen burns with a lilac flame
- Moves around faster/vigourously
