Group 1 (Alkali Metals) Flashcards
How many electrons do they have on their outer-most shell
1
What happens in a reaction with these group 1 metals
They lose an electron
How does their reactivity vary as they go down the order
It increases
Why does their reactivity increase as they go down the order
As there are more shells between the outer-most electron and the nucleus his means it is further away making the bond between the nucleus and outer-most electron weaker as a result making it easier to lose the outer-most electron and have a full outer shell
Are they soft
Yes
Why are they stored in oil
So they don’t react with air
What happens when lithium reacts with water
It moves around the surface of the water, slowest effervescence
What happens when sodium reacts with water
It melts into a ball, faster effervescence
What happens when potassium reacts with water
It gives off effervescence and burns with a lilac flame, even faster effervescence
What happens when rubidium reacts with water
It sinks, fastest effervescence
