Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is the atomic number
The number of protons
What is the mass number
The number of protons plus neutrons
What is an isotope
Forms of elements which have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass
(The abundance of an isotope x the mass of that isotope) / 100
What is the relative atomic mass
The average mass of an atom of an element in comparison to a carbon-12 atom
How do you calculate the relative formula mass
You add up all the relative atomic masses of all the elements in the formula
What must an atom have in order to be neutral overall which it must be if it’s to be called an atom
The same number of protons and electrons
What happens if an atom isn’t neutral overall
Then it becomes an ion
