group 1 Flashcards
what gas is given off when a group 1 metal is put in water
hydrogen gas
why are group one metals stored in oil
because they react with oxygen which will make hydrogenoxide and if u put that in water there will be no reaction
why do the metals float on water
because they have very low density
describe the strength and melting point of metals in comparison to most other metals
they are very low
describe the acidity of the solution produced
alkali
describe the trend in reactivity as u move down the group
they get more reactive as u move down
what’s the most reactive metal in group 1 and why
francium because it’s at the bottom of the group so therefore has the most amount of shells, which means the electrostatic attraction is a lot weaker because the shells act as a shield so the electron is a lot easier to loose
what group do these metals bond with
group 7
one property of group 1 metals
they are malleable
what is the trend as you go down the group
it gains one shell every time
what is reactivity
how easy it is to loose their outer shell
what is the acidity of the metals
alkali
how do u test for hydrogen gas
Collect the gas in a test tube.
Put the flame from a burning splint into the top of the test tube.
The gas will burn quickly and give off a squeaky ‘pop’.
what is their charge
positive- cation
