Group 0 Elements Flashcards
What are Group 0 elements otherwise known as?
They are known as the noble gases.
What is weird about the Group 0 elements?
They all have 8 electrons in their outer shell (except from Helium, it has 2 electrons in one shell) - this means that they all have a full outer shell
Why are the noble gases inert?
This means that they don’t react with much at all - As their outer shell is energetically stable they don’t need to give up or gain electrons the become more stable.
What is a monotomic gas?
Group 0 elements are monotomic gases - they are single atoms not bonded to each other.
What state are Group 0 elements in at room temperature?
They are colourless gases at room temperature.
Are the noble gases flammable and why?
Noble gases are non-flammable because they are inert.
What is the trend of the noble gases as you go down the group?
The boiling points increase as you go down the group - this is because there is an increase in the number of electrons in each atom leading to greater intermolecular forces between them which need to be overcome
