Atoms Flashcards
Where is the nucleus located in an atom?
The nucleus is located in the middle of the atom.
What is inside a nucleus?
There are protons and neutrons inside a nucleus.
Why does the nucleus have a positive charge?
This is because it contains protons.
What moves around the nucleus?
Electrons move around the nucleus in electron shells.
What is a charge of an electron?
Electrons are negatively charged.
What is the mass and charge of a proton?
A proton has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of +1.
What is the mass and charge of a neutron?
A neutron has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of 0.
What is the mass and charge of an electron?
An electron has a relative mass of 0 and a charge of -1.
How do you know how many electrons there are in an atom.
The number of electrons is equal to the number of protons.
Why are atoms neutral?
Because the negative charge of an electron and the positive charge of a proton cancel each other out making the atom neutral.
What is an ion?
An ion is an atoms or a group of atoms that has lost or gained electrons.
What is a nuclear symbol of an atom?
The nuclear symbol of an atom tells you the atoms atomic number and mass number.
What is the atomic number?
The atomic number tells you the amount of protons in an atom.
What is the mass number?
The mass number is the number of neutrons and protons in an atom.
