- Denial and shock - a state of disbelief and numbed feelings
- Anger, pain, and guilt - frustration, irritation, anxiety
- Bargaining - overwhelmed, helplessness, hostility
- Depression - struggling to find meaning, reaching out to others, telling one’s story
- Acceptance - exploring options, new plans, moving on
