Great Man Made River Flashcards
1
Q
Describe its use
A
a network of pipes that is bringing high-quality fresh water from underground aquifers deep in the Sahara to the coast of Libya for domestic use, agriculture, and industry
2
Q
Location
A
North coast of Africa
3
Q
Describe pipeline
A
6000km
Half a million pipes laid
4
Q
Advantages
A
- provides 6.5 million m3 clean water per day for north coast
- crops can be grown by irrigating them
= more food at cheaper prices
= better nutrition - 70% work done by Libyans
5
Q
Disadvantages
A
- phase 1 out of 5 was $14 billion
- 90% of Libya is desert
- concrete pipes released co2
6
Q
Temperature
A
Only 5% of country get more than 100mm rainfall per year
7
Q
Impacts of water insecurity
A
- more waterborne diseases like typhoid and cholera when pollution occurs in river
= resulted in 829,000 deaths around the world in 2016 - droughts affect crop yields and agriculture
= job losses - conflict can occur eg in 2000 in Bolivia violent protests killed 9 people due to private company owning water sources
8
Q
Describe dams and reservoirs
A
Naturally flowing valleys are dammed so river floods valley and water is trapped till needed
9
Q
Adv and dis of dams and reservoirs
A
- electricity can be generated using dam through hydroelectric power
- dams control river flow and reduce risk of flooding downstream
- some towns and villages must be flooded to create reservoir
= destroy homes - reservoirs can lose water in surface through evaporation
= unsuitable for hot climates
10
Q
Describe underground water storage
A
Water is pumped underground and stored in aquifers
11
Q
Adv and dis of underground water storage
A
- reduces water loss due to evaporation
= could supply extra houses with water - works for infrequent rainfall so water can be stored at times with no rainfall
- expensive to construct and maintain
