- In July, Nick is on a train w Tom Buchanan
- They stop near the Valley of Ashes and Tom insists that they get off the train so they can meet his mistress, Myrtle Wilson
- They go to the city to have a party at Myrtle’s apartment which Tom keeps for the affair
- Nick wants to leave but Tom insists that he stays
- The party gets out of hand because everyone has drunk a lot, Nick included
- Myrtle taunts Tom about Daisy by shouting her name and saying she can say it whenever she wants
- Tom reacts by breaking her nose
- Nick is repulsed by such violence
