Metaphor- Nick enters Gatsby’s party and it embodies the characteristics of The 1920s: financially prosperous, materially decadent, and—behind closed doors—morally loose. The sheer amount of food and drink at this party points to the enormous economic expansion that the U.S.
experienced following the end of World War I in 1918. The dark side to this economic expansion was that people were being consumed by this consumerism.

‘On the Weekends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning to long past midnight
Metaphor- Implies the materialistic pursuit of Gatsby’s guests. Gatsby’s guests want to benefit through a parasitic relationship with Gatsby and his wealth

“As I went over to say goodbye I saw that the expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby’s face”
Visual Imagery - (Modernism) Through Fitzgerald’s use of Nick as a first-person perspective, we see a peculiar look on Gatsby’s face. From what Nick can tell, Gatsby looks happy, doubtful, and disappointed all at once, which is perhaps a surprising combination of emotions for a man who has finally reconnected with the woman he’s spent half a decade longing for this Dream. Showing that the American Dream is corrupted and people who pursue it will never be satisfied

Visual Imagery- Through Fitzgerald’s use of Nick as a first-person perspective, we see how Gatsby tragically dies. The result of the American Dream. After corrupting his morals for so long he suffers a gruesome death, but now he is free from the grasp of the American Dream.

Metaphor- the last line means that our past is an anchor and a weight on us no matter how hard we try to go forward in life.

Symbolism, metaphor, simile - Magazines only show the idealised versions of things, and the likening of a magazine to Gatsby’s story suggests that he is lying, sacrificing truth and morality in order to achieve public admiration
