DOAS Flashcards
“W a l t p o a h. Y f o i, a t n t l i i”
“Work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own it, and
there’s nobody to live in it.”
Irony- Willy’s constant pursuit of material wealth and compromising his moral values created by the American dream gives no eventual personal gain. This is the catch and corruption of the Dream
The high angle shot places Willy in a position of vulnerability and the slow zoom in allows the audience to see his dazed facial expression and allows an insight into his thoughts and emotions
“Y v, s m!”
“You vengeful, spiteful mutt!”
Mid-shot/negative facial expression/Invective language: The relationship between Willy’s sons Happy and Biff is breaking down as Biff says to Willy that he is severing all ties with this family because of Willy’s rubber hose pipe and his suicide. This infuriates Willy as Biff critiques his American Dream of becoming a salesman saying that he cannot keep a steady job. This ultimately results in the breakdown of relationships between the two of them.
“W i a j, a c o, t a o t-o, a h r r!”
“Walked into a jungle, and comes out, the age of twenty-
one, and he’s rich! rich!
Two-shot- the conversation between Happy and Willy shows Willy’s facade that the American Dream is achieved from luck which is not true
Metaphor- Here, Willy discusses his jealousy for his brother Ben’s fortune. Ben came from nothing, but discovered a diamond mine in Africa and got rich. He believes the American Dream is attained by overnight success. But the reality is, Willy hasn’t achieved any sense of fulfilment or happiness for all his striving. Showing the hollow nature of the dream. Ben acts as the symbol that by pursuing the American Dream you will never be satisfied
“I r w a r l m w l h b”
“I realised what a ridiculous lie my whole life had been”
Mid-shot: This quote alludes to Biff’s realisation that he had just become a salesman and fell under the trap Willy did. place. Biff is in the same dangerous, self-destructive cycle as his father. He will never accomplish the dreams he has desired.
“A s l t, m, c n r f a”
“a star like that, magnificent, can never really fade away”
Over the shoulder shot
Eye level shot
2 shot
Willy is reminiscing about a past football game that Biff played, back to a time where Biff was successful in what he did, as Willy states that Biff was the tallest. This shows how proud Willy was and how he wanted him to pursue the American Dream to be successful like he once was.
