Q

“I w a e g f h, a r r s a I h n f i a o p”

A

“It was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person”

Metaphor- Employing the modernist trait of internal monologue, Nick comments that Gatsby has a ‘romantic readiness’ for conversation, showing his desperate desire for human connections, as Nick comments his readiness for such is like no other. This starkly contrasts the values of the larger society in the 1920s

“T i a V o A — a f f w a g l w i r a h a g g”

A

“This is a Valley of Ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes
grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens”

Symbolism- Nick introduces the Valley of Ashes to the reader, like a rundown and decrepit region. Fitzgerald accomplishes this effect by using a set of semi-sarcastic words and uncanny images. The nouns in the area are “farm,” “ridges,” “hills,” “gardens”. The imagery represents the consequence of the roaring twenties. The dust was caused by the New York industry.

Q

“C r t p?” h c i “W o c y c”

A

“Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!”

Emotive dialogue- The quote alludes to Gatsby’s dream, the truth, but it’s not the real truth. Daisy is unable to say she never loved Tom because she loved him. She isn’t going to leave Tom because it would ruin her. Gatsby wants the dream, and at this point in the novel….. she practically screams that it will never happen.

Q

” H c a T w o”

A

“His career as Trimalchio was over.”

Allusion- Trimalchio was a former slave who went through shady schemes to gain his wealth. He also threw big parties as Gatsby did. This represents the materialistic and ‘nouveau riche’ attitude that Gatsby has to impress the people of West Egg and most importantly Daisy his dream.
