Gray / white matter Flashcards
What is the typical color for cell bodies & dendrites, and axons?
Gray = cell bodies and dendrites
White = axons because of the myelin
Note: the third substance in the brain is cerebral spinal fluid
True or False. Cell bodies & dendrites will always show up as gray or the darker color on the image, and axons will show up as white.
FALSE. The staining technique can be different for each study, therefore, we have to identify cell bodies & dendrites and axons by anatomically
Location of cell bodies & dendrites and axons in:
1. Cerebrum
2. Spinal cord
- Grey matter (cell bodies & dendrites) are on the outside
- Grey matter is in the center
Diffusion tensor imaging
technology where calculations are made based on data of a healthy brain to see what the white matter axons (fibers) look like
Color coding in DTI
green: front of brain (eyes) to the back of the brain
warm colors (red, yellow): left to right
cool colors (blue, purple): top to bottom
