Describe the difference between Bitmap and Vector graphics
Bit-mapped graphics store and manipulate each pixel. They produce good quality images where shading and fine detail are needed. However when resized, bit-mapped graphics become ragged and suffer a loss of resolution. Bit-mapped graphics are created and edited using a painting program (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro). Common file formats for Bit-mapped images include:
- JPG
- GIF
- PNG
- BMP
- TIFF
Vector graphics store pictures as a collection of objects such as shapes and lines. Each object is defined by its characteristics such as position, line width and pattern. These characteristics are stored as mathematical expressions and displayed on the screen as pixels. Vector Graphics do not lose resolution when they are resized or stretched and require less memory than bit-mapped. Vector graphics are created and edited using a drawing program. (Corel Draw, Illustrator). Common file formats for Vector Graphics include:
- WMF
- CDR
- PCX
- EPS
Susan works at a printing company that turn’s the customers’ digital photos into high quality canvas prints.
Recommend with justification, ONE file format that would be appropriate for the company to print.
JPEG is a standard image format used in many printing solutions. They are a standard file format for the best combination of both file size and image quality. A JPEG image with a resolution of 100 dpi or higher would be suitable for printing on a canvas. Therefore, a JPEG file format would be an appropriate choice for the company to use for printing.
TIFF – This is a lossless file format that does not lose quality when it compressed and uncompressed. It supports CMYK colour profiles but is a bitmap file, meaning that if the original image is significantly resized, it could lose image sharpness. It’s an appropriate file format to be used by the company. However, due to the high quality of the image, the size of the file may be an issue as it may take a while to open or upload.
What is a filter?
Outline how filters can enhance an image.
A filter allows you to apply various effects to help enhance an image. They are designed to achieve a specific effect on an image.
You can completely change the look and mood to match your creative ideas. Filters can soften hard edges, bring out subtle highlights, and make a new image look like a vintage image.
Some examples of filters include colour enhancements, brightness adjustments, lens flares, noise filters or motion blurs, just to name a few.
What name is given to the type of image shown?

Which of the following is true of a progressively loading image?
A. - The image will appear blank at first, then load from top to bottom
B. - The image will loads slowly from bottom to top
C. - The image loads immediately in low quality, then is refined as more scans are rendered
D. - The image loads either odd or even lines, then on the next cycle, loads the other lines. This continues until the image has fully loaded.
C. - The image loads immediately in low quality, then is refined as more scans are rendered
The picture below is a frame still from a movie clip.
