Graphics Flashcards
What are the 3 principles of Tufte’s measures?
- Maximize data ink
- Maximize data density
- Avoid lie factors
What is data ink ratio?
Data ink ratio=data ink/total ink used in graphic
What is data density?
Data density=number of entries in data matrix/area of data graphic
What is lie factor?
Lie factor=size of effect shown in graphic/size of effect in data
What graphics we need to use to represent chronological or prioritized lists?
Numbered lists
What graphics are used for non-chronological lists?
Bulleted lists
When do we use scatter plots?
To show correlation between two sets of data
When are pie charts used?
When we compare parts to a whole. It is good for small number of segments.
Describe the particular, general, particular strategy when displaying graphic in oral presentation.
- Introduce figure and explain the dependent and independent axes.
- Point to a particular data and explain it.
- Describe the overall trend of the figure.
- Reinforce by explaining another data point.
What are journal conventions for captation?
Figure captions go on the bottom and table captions go on the top.
What would readers look at when they read paper?
Title, abstract, introduction, figures, graphs, charts
What makes a good graphic?
Simple design, intense content
Why do we need lie factor?
Show data in proportion and prevent distortion by manipulating axes
What are four types of bar graph and what are they used for?
Deviation bar: difference from expected value(profits/loses)
Sliding bar: how a group split (male/female)
Stacked bar: compare parts to whole
Grouped bar: compare relationships
