Sangiovese heritage
- Euboeans initially created emporia(trading posts) along the coast of Italy and then switched to apoikia
- Inlfuenced by odyssey and the people literally tried to follow the steps of Ulysses
- They would use the myths to help them not be scared
- They needed wine for symposiums (get togethers for men to discuss things) which needs to be color of blood = sangiovese
Visparola Heritage
- Phocaens
- Influenced by other myths
- Phocaens were more interested in making emporia and not apoikia
- Could travel during winter carrying dormant vine cuttings because of better ships and stuff better traders
- Transferred vine material from Balkans + Italy
Other important founding grapes in the Adriatic after Visparola
- Gargenega, bombino Bianco, Malvasia bianca lunga, vulpea
- Bombino Bianco is the parent of Montepulciano
Difference between Eubeans and Phocaens
So the difference is that the Eubeans came over from greek isalnds with raisins and planted them which created these new vines in Italy whereas on the Adriatic, the Phocaens were able to bring in tact planting material that are more characteristically greek vines on the eastern coast.

- Divided by Greek + Punic cultural areas
Sardegna
- Probably a secondary area for domestication
- Many wild grape varieties – some used in wine production
- Hundreds of cultivars
- Cannonau- related to Georgian/Armenian wine
Why does genetic variability remain high in Italy?
- Dioecious wild vines cross pollinate easily = heterozygosity
- Vegetative propogation = herterozygosity maintained
- Domestication selected hermaphrodite/monoecious vines
- Spontaneous crossing (not self pollination) = source of new varieties
- Many European founding vines were dioecious female(more likely to create biologically fit wines
