Granite Flashcards
Explain why there are vertical and horizontal joints?
Vertical: formed during the cooling of the rock
Horizontal: Formed by pressure release when overlying rock was removed
What causes the: enlarged joints, broken rocks at the bottom and rounded edges
- Enlarged joints caused by freeze thaw weathering
- Broken off rocks at the bottom, a result of freeze thaw weathering
- Rounded edges caused by chemical weathering
Name the Characteristics of Granite
Tough and resistant
Three main minerals: black mica, grey -colored quarts and pink feldspar
Features of a granite landscape
- Moorland
- Impermeable
- Boggy
- Stunted trees
- Low vegetation
- Tors
Recall a Tor and a Batholith
Tor: an isolated outcrop of rock on a hill top
Batholith: a large, randomly shaped mass of igneous rock that will only reach the surface when overlying rocks are removed
Human uses for Dartmoor
- reservoirs
- arable farming
- quarrying if stone
- tin
- china clay
- tourism
Describe the uses of extraction, water supply, farming and scenery (Granite)
- Building stone, china clay, kitchen surfaces
- Impermeable = reservoirs.
- extensive sheep farming on poor pastures .
- Attractive moorland scenery, water sports, walking etc
Name 5 characteristics of a Granite Tor
- vertical joints
- horizontal joints
- large joints
- rounded edges
- broken rocks at the foot of the tor
