one word utterances to convey greater meaning
e.g ‘drink’ means ‘I want drink’
pivot words
function words which occur at the beginning or ending of utterances
help with the syntax and structure of an utterance e.g prepositions, modal auxiliaries, pronouns, articles
e.g in ‘more drink’ ‘more’ is the pivot word
other examples include: all gone, other, no, all
open words
the words that occur with pivots are termed open words
have meaning e.g nouns, verbs, modifiers
aka content words
e.g ‘more food’ food- open word more - pivot word
accusative pronouns
object position (impacted by the verb)
e.g they love apple pies
give me a hug
he bought a new car
nominative pronouns
subject position (doer of the verb)
e.g he is crying
she is a teacher
i love him
