Gram -ive bacteria , Part 1 Flashcards
Moraxella arranged in pairs (diplococci)
✔️or✖️
✖️
Neisseria
( contains cytochrome oxidase enzyme)
Neisseria (Cocci - bacteria)
Gram -ive Bacteria characterized by Petechical or purpuric rashes …….that caused by ……
Meningococcal septicemia
that is caused by Neisseria meningitidis
Produces pyocyanin (a Blue-green pigment)
Nutritional requirements are minimum
causes many nosocomial infections
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
(Rod straight +O2 bacteria)
Is common cause of otitis media in infants and children
produce beta lactamase,
Moraxella catarrhalis (Cocci -ive bacteria)
Hyperproduction of endotoxin causes diffuse vascular damage
Ex. endothelial damage, thrombosis (clotting), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
Is P athogenesis of
meningococcal disease (Neisseria meningitidis)
Penicillin no longer drug of choice for Neisseria gonorrhoeae due to:
• Plasmid-encoded beta-lactamase production
• Chromosomally-mediated resistance

Produces DNAase,
Moraxella catarrhails
Many enzymes like catalases, proteases, elastase and others two enzymes phospholipase
C and glycolipids help in local invasion of
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Release :
Endotoxins \ which produce fever and septic shock.
Exotoxin-A \ inactivates the EF-2
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Commonly colonize nasopharynx of health
Second most common cause (after S. pneumoniae) of community-acquired meningitis
Neisseria meningitidis
Aminoglycosides and extended spectrum Penicillins are therapy for ….
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Post meningococcal reactive diseases lasting 15-20 days .
✖️
lasting 4-10 days
What are the Post meningococcal reactive diseases
arthritis ,pericarditis , rash , fever
Treatment for dual infections : Chlamydia + Neisseria gonorrhoea
ceftriaxone, cefixime or fluoroquinolone
Combined with
doxycycline or azithromycin
capsule is the major virulence factor of
Neisseria meningitidis
-Sensitive to dehydration
-has Kidney shaped
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
More common in homosexual/bisexual men than in
heterosexual population
Source : asymptomatic in Females
usually occurs in combination with Syphilis, HIV or Trachoma.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
What are clinical significance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Pneumonia
Sepsis
External Otitis
UTI
Diabetic Osteomyelitis
Ophthalmia neonatorum, pharangitis
Clinical significance of
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
virulent factors of aerobic Neisseria
1- Pili (resistance to phagocytosis)
2- Outer membrane proteins
( OMP I + OMP III ) work in association as transporters ,, OMP II responsible for repeated infection and helps in attachment with pili together to epithelial cells of urethra , rectum and other mucosal cells
3- IgA protease ( produced by both gonococci and meningococcal ) work on cleaving IgA to help the pathogens evade
(evade = يتملص ، يتهرب)
4- Lipoologosacharides (LOS) -shorter , highly branched, non repeat O-antigen side chain as LPS.
LOS antigen induces IgM in normal human serum
