Governor Flashcards
What is the governor
A safety device that monitors the speed of the elevator
Two ways a governor can trip
-electrically
-mechanically
Electrical trip
-set to a certain speed (lower than mechanical)
-when tripped, shuts power off to the motor
-can activate when elevator is moving in both directions
Mechanical trip
-set to a higher speed than the electrical trip
-can only be tripped when elevator is moving in the down direction
-activates safeties on elevator when tripped
Where are the wire seals
-on the spring for the weights
-on the spring for the jaws
What is the sheave in the bottom of the shaft called
Governor tension sheave
When should the governor be checked for proper operation
-time of install
-periodic inspection
-Cat 1 inspection
-Cat 5 inspection
How does the governor get tripped mechanically
When the sheave is spinning fast enough, the weights get pushed outward due to centrifugal force and hits the jaws closed, stopping the gov cable and pulling the release carrier(only activated in the down direction)
What does full safety mean
When the governor is tripped electrically and mechanically
