-electrically
-mechanically

Electrical trip

A

-set to a certain speed (lower than mechanical)
-when tripped, shuts power off to the motor
-can activate when elevator is moving in both directions

Mechanical trip

A

-set to a higher speed than the electrical trip
-can only be tripped when elevator is moving in the down direction
-activates safeties on elevator when tripped

How does the governor get tripped mechanically

A

When the sheave is spinning fast enough, the weights get pushed outward due to centrifugal force and hits the jaws closed, stopping the gov cable and pulling the release carrier(only activated in the down direction)
