What is popular sovereignty?
Basis for every new state constitution. government can exist and function only with the consent of the governed people
what is federalism?
Division of power among a central government
What is separation of powers?
Basic powers are distributed among 3 distinct and independent branches of government
What is Checks and balances??
Each branch is subject to a number of constitutional checks by the other branches
What is judicial review?
Power of courts to determine whether what government does is in accord with what the constitution provides
What is limited government?
No government is all powerful. a government may only do those things that people have given it the power to do
What is the protection for individual rights and liberties?
liberties- protections against government
rights- positive acts of government that seek to make constitutional guaranties a reality of all people

What is political suicide?
A politician doesn’t want to be connects to a contreversal topic
What is referendon?
Legislative measure is referred to the voter for approval or rejection (legalize gambling)
What is initiative?
certain number of qualified voters sign petitions in favor of proposed statute which goes directly to the ballot (18 year old to sign petition)
