Blood and Lymphatic system Flashcards
What is leukocytes?
White Blood
What is Thrombocytes?
Platelets
What is Erythrocytes?
Red Blood
What is the job of the Leukocyte?
1/2 of blood
Responsible for immunity
What is the job of Plasma?
Responsible for transport
What is the job of Erythrocytes?
44% of blood
Carry oxygen to hemoglobin
What is the job of the Thrombocytes?
1/2% of blood
Blood clotting
How much of the blood is plasma?
55%
What is the job of the Neutrophil?
Phagocytes- Always present
Multiple nuclei
What is the job of Eosinophil?
Release toxins to kill parasites
What is the job of Basophil?
Release Histamine which makes blood vessels leaky
What is the job of Monocytes?
Macrophage
Large phagocyte
What is the job of the Lymphocyte?
Immunity
B/T cells
What is an Antigen?
Identification
What is Antibody
Attack foreign antigens
What is Agglutination
Clumping of cells
What is the hormone produced by the thymus?
Thymosin
What does the Cytotoxic T cell do?
Kills foreign pathogens by releasing chemicals
What does the Suppressor T cell do?
Release chemicals to stop immune response
What does the T memory Cells do?
Store information about a specific antigen for future infections
What does the helper T cell do?
Release cytokines which activates B cells
What does the Plasma cell do?
Produce antibodies
Die in 3-4 days
What does the B memory Cell do?
Store antigen info for future infections
On 2nd exposure produce antibodies in 2 days
Live 7-10 years
What is active immunity?
Exposed to foreign antigen and make memory cells
What is passive immunity?
Patient is given antibodies from outside source
Ex: mom to baby or tetanus shot
What is Natural immunity?
Anything the happens naturally
Ex. Mom to baby or got sick
What is artificial immunity
Immunizations
Infection of antibodies
What disorder doesn’t have enough erythrocytes to carry oxygen sufficiently
Anemia
What disorder is the overproduction of white blood cells
Leukemia
What disorder is when the mother has Rh- and the fetus in Rh+
Hemolytic disease of the newborn
What disease has an excessive amount of erythrocytes which causes think blood?
Polycythemia
What disease has the inability to produce the blood blotting factor?
Hemophilia
What disorder causes the immune system to become weak?
Mononucleosis
What disorder is a clot that develops in a unbroken blood vessel?
Thrombus
What disorder is a thrombus that breaks away and travels through the body?
Embolus
What disorder is an infection which effects the helper T cells?
HIV/AIDS
What disorder is a disorder that targets normal body cells and tissues in the immune system?
Autoimmune disease
What disorder is when the immune system fails to developed normally or immune response is blocked
Immunodeficiency
