What immigration agencies does DHS house?
- USCIS (AAO is within USCIS)
- CBP
- ICE
What is USCIS responsible for?
- processes affirmative immigration applications
- adjudicates refugee, asylee, and naturalization petitions
- issues grants or denials of work authorization
What is CBP responsible for?
- Enforcing immigration and customs laws near the borders
- Training Border Patrol agents
- Can question, investigate, and detain people at ports of entry
- determining applications for some non-immigrant visas
What is ICE responsible for?
- investigating and enforcing immigration and customs laws within the US
- in charge of detention
- in charge of deportations
- represents US government in immigration proceedings
What is EOIR responsible for?
- adjudicating immigration cases (immigration court)
What is the BIA responsible for?
- Hearing immigration case appeals
What is the AAO responsible for?
- Reviewing denials of USCIS applications.
- Limited to certain types of applications - (including I-601, I-212, I-360, I-918 among others)
Where is the agency information listed on a receipt notice?
- The top of the receipt lists the agency
- Some receipts list the field office location at the bottom (ex: USCIS receipts)
