GOUT
what is gout?
-acute arthritis of single joint
-uric acid crystals cause inflammation at joint
-common in great toe
-causes swelling and inflammation
-very painful
what are causes of gout?
-certain drugs
-chemotherapy
-tumors
-trauma
-infection
-illness
-diet

what are the signs of gout?
-very painful
-immobility/stiffness
-loss of function
-usually precipitating event
what are the symptoms of gout?
-pain
-rapid onset
-swelling
-redness (infection)
-deformity
-loss of function
-crepitus
what is the treatment for gout?
-NSAIDS
what are the dental aspects of gout?
aspirin- interferes with uric acid removal
drug treatment- may cause oral ulceration
what is osteoarthritis?
degenerative disease of weight bearing joints- due to the wearing away of cartilage that caps the bones of your joints
what are the signs of osteoarthritis?
-pain (improves with rest-worse when active)
-brief morning stiffness
-slow progression
what are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?
-may be asymptomatic
-deformity
-swelling
-radiographic evidence:
-loss of joint space
-subchondral sclerosis (due to load bearing)
-osteophyte lipping at edge of joint
what is the treatment for oestoarthritis?
-NSAIDS
-muscle exercise
-walking aids
-weightloss
-joint replacements (for pain NOT loss of function)
what are the dental aspects of osteoarthritis?
-TMJ can be involved but symptoms are rare
-difficulty accessing care
-chronic NSAIDS may cause oral ulceration/bleeding
-joint replacement- antibiotic prophylaxis rarely needed
