what do biologics target?
1 specific part of the immune system
what are the 3 types of biologics ?
cytokines
fusion proteins
monoclonal ab’s
what do monoclonal ab’s target?
a SPECIFIC antigen
-block part of the immune system that causes the auto immune disease
what are biologics used for?
autoimmune diseases and cancers
what do monoclonal ab’s drugs end in?
“mab”
what group of drugs end in “mab”?
tnf alpha inhibitors
what monitoring is needed for dmards and biologics?
fbc
renal and liver checks
pre screening for infections
what is the purpose of biologics in cancer treatment?
they improve the bodies immune response to cancer
what types of cancers are biologics best to treat?
advanced
metastatic
recurrent
what is used for squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck?
cetaximab and pembrolizimab
what are anti-rankl biologics used for?
types of bone cancers
-they are used to reduce the turnover of bone and therefore reduce the risk of fractures
give an examples of anti-rankl
denosumab
what are the dental considerations of those taking biologics?
increase risk of infection
atypical of latent dental infections -may not present as normal symptoms for that infection
side effects include heart failure
must check renal and liver function
when should you do dental work on someone taking biologics?
always discuss with provider but may be best to do before or between doses and may need to stop for invasive surgery
when should biologics recommence after surgery?
when there are signs of good healing and no signs of infection
