Gout Flashcards
Hyperuricemia
Uric acid levels exceed soluble threshold- crystals begin to form
Causes- increased or decreased renal excretion of uric acid
Crystal deposit
Crystals deposit in synovial fluid and other tissues
Immune system detects and start inflammation process releasing cytokines
Acute gout
Neutrophils infiltrate the joint
Rapid onset of pain, redness, swelling
Inter critical period
After acute attack - crystals remain, inflammation resolves
Periods between attacks vary, becoming short as disease progresses
Chronic gout
Chronic hyperuricemia leads to large crystals in in joints, tendons and soft tissue
Chronic inflammation = joint destruction, deformities, functional impairment
What is it?
Gout is a metabolic disorder characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints and tissues, leading to acute and chronic inflammation. It results from hyperuricemia (elevated serum uric acid levels).
