What is GORD?
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Reflux of stomach contents +/- oesophagitis
What is oesophagitis?
Inflammation of the oesophagus
What is the pathophysiology of GORD?
Relaxation of the lower oesophageal sphincter
Reflux of stomach contents causing irritation due to low pH
What are risk factors for developing GORD?
Increasing age Family history of heartburn/GORD Hiatus hernia Obesity Smoking
What are the symptoms of GORD?
Heartburn - burning in chest after meals
Acid regurgitation
Bloating
What are the investigations for GORD?
No investigations indicated - just PPI trial
How is GORD managed?
PPI trial
- omeprazole 20mg PO OD
- 8 weeks
Continued if symptom relief
What lifestyle advice can be given to patients?
Weight loss
Smoking cessation
Identify + remove trigger foods
What foods can trigger GORD?
Chocolate Caffeine Alcohol Acidic foods Spicy foods
