GORD Flashcards
Antacids can be used to treat GORD, how?
Neutralisation of stomach acid.
Give two examples of antacids and their side-effects.
Aluminium Hydroxide - Constipation
Magnesium Hydroxide - Diarrhoea
Describe how PPI’s work.
PPI’s or Proton Pump Inhibitors are pro-drugs and only become active at the cannalciulus.
They block all active proton pumps preventing H+ ions being released into the stomach causing acidity.
Give and example of a PPI.
Omeprazole
What is the suffix for PPIs
-Prazole
What are the side effects of PPIs
Constipation, diarrhoea and headaches.
How would you eradicate a H.Pylori infection?
Avoid NSAIDs
Prescribe; Omeprazole, Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin
H2 receptor antagonists work by…?
They competitively inhibit H2 receptors and block the action of histamine in HCl production.
What are the side effects of H2 receptor antagonists
Hypotension, diarrhoea, constipation and headaches.
There are two types of mucosal strengtheners. Name them.
Sucralfate and Bismuth chealate
How do mucosal strengtheners work?
Binds to the base of an ulcer forming a gel with the surrounding mucous to form a barrier against acid and pesin.
Which mucosal strengthener is toxic to H.Pylori?
Bismuth Chealate
