Grammar tip: Relative pronouns “who,” “when” and “which”
Relative pronouns are used to connect words, phrases and clauses to the nouns they describe.
We use the relative pronoun who in describing people:
“The project is the brainchild of French and Spanish scientists, who have been working on it for five years in the southern Spanish city of Alicante.”
(In this sentence, who was used to describe French and Spanish scientists.)
On the other hand, when is used in describing a specific time:
“We are trying to replicate a situation from millions of years ago, when phytoplankton were transformed into oil.”
(In this sentence, when was used to describe millions of years ago.)
And lastly, we use which in describing things:
“In an area of 50 by 50 kilometers, which is not that big in the desert regions of southern Spain, we could produce 1.25 million barrels.”
(In this sentence, which was used to describe an area of 50 by 50 kilometers.)
