What/who is God?
The creator and ruler of the universe; the supreme being
What is God like?
God I seen by religion as:
- Omnipotent (almighty)- capable of doing anything eg. Creating the universe
- Omniscient- aware of everything that happens, past present and future
- Benevolent (all-loving, all-good)- by providing everything people need for survival on Earth
- Immanent- God is present in the universe and involved with life on Earth. People are able to experience God in their lives. God acts in history and influences events
- Transcendent- God is beyond and outside of life on Earth and the universe. God is not limited by the world, time Earth or space. He is outside of human understanding
What does Omnipotent mean?
Omnipotent means almighty- capable of doing anything eg. God is Omnipotent because he created the universe
What does Omniscient mean?
Omniscient means aware of everything that happens, past present and future
What does Benevolent mean?
Benevolent means all-loving and all-good, this links back to God because he provided everything people need for survival on Earth
What does Immanent mean?
Immanent refers to God being present in the universe and involved with life on Earth. People are able to experience God in their lives. God acts in history and influences events
What does Transcendent mean?
Transcendent refers to God being beyond and outside of life on Earth and the universe. God is not limited by the world, time Earth or space. He is outside of human understanding
What is Revelation?
Revelation is where something about God has been ‘revealed’ to mankind
What is General Revelation?
Where God has made himself known through the beauty in nature
What is Special Revelation?
Where God has interacted directly with a person or group
What is the Cosmological (first cause) argument?
- Everything that exists has a cause
- The universe exists
- It must have a cause
- The cause is God
What is an Analogy?
An Analogy is when a similarity is suggested between two things, something new and something unknown
What is a Miracle?
A Miracle is an event which seems to break the laws of nature
What is the Teleological (design) argument?
- A thumb is intricately designed
- It must have a designer
- The designer is God
- Therefore God exists
What is an example of a miracle in Islam?
A miracle could be an unexplained cure from illness or survival from certain death. Muslims believe that the only miracle is the Qur’an- no human could write a book like the Qur’an without divine intervention
