Glycoproteins Flashcards
What are glycoproteins?
Proteins with carbs attached
1st Class of Glycoproteins: Glycoproteins
The protein is the largest component by weight
Protein (>50%) > Carb
Important role: membrane proteins
2nd Class of Glycoproteins: Proteoglycans
The protein is attached to a particular type of polysaccharide called a glycosaminoglycan
Carb (~75%) > Protein
Important role: structural, lubricants
3rd Class of Glycoproteins: Mucins/Mucoproteins
The protein is characteristically attached to the carb by N-acetylgalactosamine
Carb > Protein
Important role: lubricants
Glycosaminoglycans are composed of
repeating units of a disaccharide, one of which is a derivative of an amino sugar and one of which carries a (-) charge, either as a carboxylate or sulfate
Lectins
Glycan-binding proteins bind to specific oligosaccharides on the cell surface, regions of interaction (cells and their environments)
- Cell recognition
Selectins
A particular class of glycan-binding protein - Help immune system cells bind to site of injury
