Glycolysis Flashcards
What is the committing step in glycolysis?
Step 3 - the conversion of fructose-6-P to fructose-1,6-bis P by PFK
What inhibits hexokinase?
High glucose 6-P
What are the key enzymes involved in glycolysis?
Hexokinase, PFK and pyruvate kinase
Why are there so many steps in glycolysis?
Chemistry easer, gives versatility and allows for fine control
Why do you phosphorylates glucose?
Makes glucose negatively charged therefore prevents passage back across plasma membrane. Also makes the glucose more reactive
What are the two phases of glycolysis?
Investment phase and payback phase
What does PFK stand for?
Phosphofructoskinase
What is the hormonal regulation of PFK?
Stimulated by insulin
Inhibited by glucagon
What is the allsoteric regulation of PFK?
Inhibited by high ATP
Stimulated by high AMP
What stimulates pyruvate kinase?
Stimulated by high insulin:glucagon ratio ie high insulin and low glucoagon
