Glycogen Storage Disease Flashcards
Severe fasting hypoglycemia, highly elevated glycogen in liver, inc TGs, inc uric acid + hepatomegaly
Von Gierke Disease (type I glycogen storage disease)
Enzyme def in Von Gierke Disease
glucose-6-phosphatase
Tx of Von Gierke
- frequent oral glucose/cornstarch
2. avoid fructose and galactose
Cardiomegaly, hyeprrophic cardiomyopathy, exercise intolerance, systemic findings (leading to early death)
Pompe Disease (type II)
enzyme def in Pompe
lysosomal alpha, 1-4 glucosidase (acid maltase)
Cori disease
milder form of type I (Von Gierke)
- normal blood lactate levels
- gluconeogenesis intact
enzyme def in Cori disease
debranching enzyme (alpha 1,6 glucosidase)
painful muscle cramps, myoglobinuria (red urine) w/ strenuous exercise, possible ARR
McArdle Disease (type V)
enzyme def in McArdle
skeletal muscle glycogen phosphorylase (myophosphorylase)
Tx McArdle Disease
typically blood glucose levels are fine
tx w/ Vit B6
