Glycogen Metabolism Flashcards
What is Glycogen?
Storage of carbohydrates
- Upon hydrolysis, Glucose formed.
List TWO sites where glycogen is stored
- Liver
- Muscle cells
How is Glucose linked in Glycogen production?
- Linear = a(1-4) link
- Branched = a(1-6) link
In glycogen, how frequently do glucose branches occur?
every tenth residues (units)
How many residues (units) form a single glycogen chain?
12-14 glucose residues
List the 3 steps of Glycogenolysis.
- Addition of a phosphate causes glucose to dissociate from chain (Glucose binds to Pi upon release, forming G1P)
- G1P to G6P
- G6P to Glucose
List 3 molecules required for the synthesis of glycogen
- high [glucose] present
- UTP (energy source, turning into UDP)
- Glycogenin (incorperated with glucose to produce glycogen)
List the 2 steps involved in UDP-glucose to glycogen
- Incorporation of Glycogenin with the removal of UDP (glucose-UDP to glucose subunits)
- Incorporation of glucose into the glycogen chain (non-reducing end)
List the 4 steps of glycogenesis
- Glucose to G6P
- G6P to G1P
- G1P to UDP-glucose (Use of UTP)
- UDP-glucose to glycogen
[glycogen = a(1-4) & a(1-6) glucose]
State the 2 glucose linkage sequences in a glycogen chain.
- e.g. alpha(?->?)
Linear, a(1->4)
Branched, a(1->6)
State the 3 UDP-glucose constituents
- Uridine (uracil)
- Di-phosphate
- Glucose
