Gluteal Muscles Flashcards
Gluteal Muscles
minimis, medius, maximus, and tensor fasciae latae
Gluteus Minimis OIFIn
O: Between anterior and inferior gluteal lines of ilium
I: Ridge on anterior/lateral surface of greater trochanter
F: Abducts hip, supports upright hip when opposite foot is off the ground, medially rotates hip
In: superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Medius OIFIn
O: Between anterior and posterior gluteal lines and gluteal fascia
I: Ridge on lateral surface of greater trochanter
F: Powerful abductor of hip, supports upright hip, rotate hip joint medially
In: Superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Maximus OIFIn
O: Rough ilium behind posterior gluteal line, post. iliac crest, lower post. sacrum, side of coccyx, fascia of gluteus medius
I: large upper 2/3 attaches to iliotibial tract of fascia lata, lower 1/3 into gluteal tuberosity
F: Extends flexed thigh and lateral rotation of hip, can move trunk or thigh depending on what is fixed, abducts hip joint, tenses ITB and fascia lata and stabilizes femur on the tibia
In: Inferior gluteal nerve
Tensor Fasciae Latae OIFIn
O: Outer lip of anterior iliac crest, lateral part of anterior superior iliac spine, underside of ITB
I: Descends between the 2 layers of iliotibial tract and attaches to them
F: Medial rotation and flexion of hip, weak extension of knee, lateral rotation of leg @ knee, stabilizes the hip and knee during standing
In: Superior gluteal nerve
How does the gluteus medius aid in walking?
The gluteus medius prevents adduction of the hip when walking
How does the gluteus maximus aid in walking?
It extends the trunk to prevent hip flexion
What muscle causes the polio gait when paralyzed?
Gluteus minimis
