gluteal and posterior femoral muscles Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
O- posterior crest of illium, posterior gluteal line, sacrotuberous ligament
I- gluteal tuberosity and Iliotibial tract
A- extend and laterally rotates thigh; act on ITT with tensor fascia latae to stabilize knee (important for stair and getting up from seated position)
N- inferior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Medius
O- illium, posterior and anterior gluteal lines
I- greater trochanter
A- abduction; posterior fibers- act with maximus to laterally rotate; anterior fibers acts with minims to medially rotates, level sacral base when opposite limb is unsupported
N- superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus Minimus
O- illium btw anterior and inferior gluteal lines
I- greater trochanter
A- abduction, and medially rotates thigh, acts with medius to level sacral base
N- superior gluteal nerve
Tensor Fascia Latae
O- Nest to ASIS
I- lateral tibial condyle via illiotibial tract
A- abducts, flexes, and medially rotates thigh; maintains knee in extended position by tensing illiotibial tract
N- superior gluteal nerve

Biceps Femoris
O- long head: ischial tuberosity
Short head: lateral lip of linea aspera
I- lateral condyle of tibia and head of fibula
A- long head- extends thigh, flexes leg; short head- flexes leg
N- long head- tibial component of sciatic nerve; short head- common fibular nerve
Semimembranosus
O- ischial tuberosity
I- posterior surface, medial condyle of tibia
A- extends thigh, flexes and medially rotates leg when knee is flexed
N- tibial component of sciatic nerve
semitendinosus
O- ischial tuberosity
I- medial anterior surface of tibia below condyle
A- extends thigh; flexes and medially rotates leg when knee is flexed
N- tibial compartment of sciatic nerve
