Gluteus Maximus

A

Innervation: inferior gluteal nerve

Origin: posterior medial iliac crest, posterior sacrum and coccyx, aponeurosis of erector spinae

Insertion: gluteal tuberosity of the femur, iliotibial tract of the fascia lata

Action: extension and lateral rotation of the thigh; upper fibers abduct the thigh; braces the knee via the iliotibial tract

A

Innervation: sacral nerves S1,2

Origin: anterior sacrum

Insertion: superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur

Action: lateral rotation and abduction of the thigh

Innervation: superior gluteal nerve

Origin: superior posterior surface of the ilium

Insertion: lateral surface of the greater trochanter

Action: abduction and medial rotation of the thigh

A

Innervation: superior gluteal nerve

Origin: inferior posterior surface of the ilium, deep to the gluteus medius

Insertion: anterior surface of the greater trochanter

Action: abduction and medial rotation of the thigh

Tensor Fascia Latae

A

Innervation: superior gluteal nerve

Origin: anterior iliac crest, lateral portion of the ASIS

Insertion: iliotibial tract of the fascia lata, about 1/3 of the way down the lateral thigh

Action: flexion, abduction, and medial rotation of the thigh; tenses the iliotibial tract; stabilizes the knee
