Glute Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
Innervation: inferior gluteal nerve
Origin: posterior medial iliac crest, posterior sacrum and coccyx, aponeurosis of erector spinae
Insertion: gluteal tuberosity of the femur, iliotibial tract of the fascia lata
Action: extension and lateral rotation of the thigh; upper fibers abduct the thigh; braces the knee via the iliotibial tract
Piriformis
Innervation: sacral nerves S1,2
Origin: anterior sacrum
Insertion: superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur
Action: lateral rotation and abduction of the thigh
Gluteus Medius
Innervation: superior gluteal nerve
Origin: superior posterior surface of the ilium
Insertion: lateral surface of the greater trochanter
Action: abduction and medial rotation of the thigh
Gluteus Minimus
Innervation: superior gluteal nerve
Origin: inferior posterior surface of the ilium, deep to the gluteus medius
Insertion: anterior surface of the greater trochanter
Action: abduction and medial rotation of the thigh
Tensor Fascia Latae
Innervation: superior gluteal nerve
Origin: anterior iliac crest, lateral portion of the ASIS
Insertion: iliotibial tract of the fascia lata, about 1/3 of the way down the lateral thigh
Action: flexion, abduction, and medial rotation of the thigh; tenses the iliotibial tract; stabilizes the knee
