Glucose tolerance lab Flashcards
Where would glucose be found 2 hours after ingestion?
Stored in adipocytes as trigylcerides
Stored in liver and muscle as glycogen
How is glucose filtered by the kidney?
Mainly SGLT2 transporters in PCT reabsorbs glucose from lumen into the cell
GLUT-2 transporters moves glucose from cell to bloodstream
At what blood glucose concentration would you expect to find glucose in your urine?
11 mmol/l
due to saturation of SGLT2 so glucose can no longer be reabsorbed
why is glycosuria not used as a diagnostic marker for diabetes?
because glucose could be in urine for other reasons such as kidney failure
when would you find the highest concentration of insulin during a GTT?
After glucose peak
when would you find the highest concentration of glucagon during a GTT?
before eating
which hormones and neurotransmitters will increase in the procedure of taking blood?
Cortisol (doesn’t affect test because takes time to have an effect)
Adrenaline
Cytokines + inflammatory mediators
list the tissues that are totally dependent on glucose as an energy source? explain Why
testes - due to testis blood barrier
Brain - due to BBB
Erythrocytes - no mitochondria
why might a patient with diabetes mellitus have glucose >11 moll/l after ran overnight fast?
Due to unopposed glucagon so glucose is released into blood
