A pre-recoded segment of sound, often manipulated in some way.
Sample
Music that is based on scales ascending and/or descending in pitch.
Scalic
The second theme or melody in a Piece.
Second subject
12 equally spaced intervals into which an octave is divided.
Semitones
Repetition of a musical phrase at a higher or lower pitch than the original. (the same shape as before)
Sequence
An accent showing that a note or chord should be paid with greater force than other notes surrounding it. (sf or sfz)
Sforzando
Hitting the edge of the snare drum with the sticks held sideways.
Side sticks
The beat naturally divides into two equal halves.
Simple time signature
A part of the music where there is more than one part being preformed at the same time.
Simultaneously sounding
A rapid succession of hits of the snare drum.
Snare roll
A type of drum with a series of loosely strung metal wires in contact with the lower skin which create a distinct ‘buzzing’ or ‘rattling’ when the drum is struck.
Snare drum
A ‘Concerto’ for a single instrument accompanied by an orchestra.
Solo concerto
An extended or improvised melodic line played by a single instrument (trumpet, guitar, sax, piano etc.) over a given chord sequence, usually as an interlude in the middle of a song.
Solo
A large scale form invented in the Classical era comprising three sections (Exposition, Development and Recapitulation).
