- A method of closure that utilizes the air pressure created by placing the dome of the vault onto the base of the vault, often called the diving bell principle
Air Seal
- A transfer container consisting of a wooden tray with a cardboard covering for the casket
Air Tray
- An enclosure for human remains in preparation for cremation. The container is composed of an appropriate combustible material; rigid enough for handling ease; assures the protection of the health and safety of the crematory operator as well as provide appropriate covering for the remains
Alternative Container
- The lining attached to the undersurface of the foot panel of the casket and/or a component part of the throw (overlay) which extends downward into the body of the casket
Apron
- The part of the casket handle that attaches the bar to the lug (ear)
Arm
The sum of a group of numbers divided by the number of units
Average (Mean)
(steeled, frosted)
Is a smooth non-polished finish for stone monuments and markers achieved by sandblasting a polished finish with steel shot or other abrasives
Axed
A single handle is which the lug, arm, and bar are combined in one unit
Bail Handle
- A part of the casket handle attached to the lug or arm and held by a casket bearer when moving and positioning a casket
Bar
- The lower or supporting part of a monument. In some monuments, there may be a first, second, and third
Base
- Molding along the lowermost edge of the body panels
Base Molding
The portion of the casket upon which the human remains are placed
Bed
A type of cemetery memorial consisting of a top piece supported by two standards; used to identify family burial plots or in conjunction with a family monument
Bench
A small headstone, set above ground, with a slanting top
Bevel Top Marker
A stand on which a casket is placed for funeral service display
Bier
- A method of price quotation showing separately the price of the service to be rendered and the price of the casket
Bi Unit Pricing
- A subdivision of a cemetery containing several lots
Block
*The lower portion of the casket shell containing the top body molding, body panel, base molding, and casket bottom
Body
A molding along the uppermost edge of the body panels
Body Ledge (Top Body Molding)
- The horizontal portion of the top body molding (body ledge) where the gasket is placed on gasketed caskets
Body Ledge Flange (top body molding flange)
Material which drapes the inside perimeter of the body of the casket
Body Lining
Compose the sides and ends of the casket shell
Body Panels
Component part of the cap (lid) on half couch caskets that provides support at the point of the transverse cut
Bridge (header, cap filler)
- A twilled, napped, woolen or worsted fabric with a smooth lustrous face and dense texture; a fabric usually made of cotton, silk, or rayon woven in a plain or rib weave with a soft semi-gloss finish
Broadcloth
- A metal alloy consisting of 90% copper with tin and sometimes zinc comprising the other 10%
Bronze
Bare metal is scratched with an abrasive material and the finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained
Brushed Finish
A casket for interring or entombing human remains
Burial Casket
*The upper portion of the casket shell, including the ogee, crown, pie, and header
Cap / Lid
*The focal part of the interior which fills the inside of the crown, sometimes bordered by the roll (cove); may be referred to as the panel
Cap Panel
Any item of service or merchandise obtained from a third party and paid for by the funeral provider on the purchaser’s behalf

A casket designed to be re-used for multiple funeral service events with a removable liner to facilitate the cremation or other disposition of human remains following funeral service events

A crafted metal container with an applied enamel finish
Cloisonné
A rigid container designed for the encasement of human remains that is arthropodal in shape
Coffin
A structure, room, or space in a mausoleum or other building containing niches or recesses used to hold cremated remains
Columbarium
- A transfer container for uncasketed human remains consisting of a particle board tray with a cardboard cover
Combination Case (combo case)
Any product designed or intended to be used together as both a casket and as a permanent burial receptacle

Setting prices based on the competitor’s strategies, prices, costs, and marketing offerings

Copper Deposit
An optional part of casket hardware that is attached to the four corners of the body panel
Corner
- A container used to hold human remains constructed out of cardboard made with a series of alternative folds and ridges
Corrugated Container
Pricing based on the cost of producing, distributing, and selling the product plus a fair rate of return for effort and risk
Cost Based Pricing
A crypt in which the casket lies parallel to the face of the crypt
Couch Crypt
- A component part of the casket interior which lines the rim (ogee) and surrounds the cap panel

- An exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated with a substance that wrinkles as it dries; most often found on less expensive caskets
Crinkled (wrinkled) Finish
- The uppermost part of the casket cap
Crown (swell)
- A casket interior style created by placing the lining material on a metal form, then adding weights, and using steam to permanently maintain the style. Casket interior cloths are then attached to a suitable casket upholstery (backing material)
Crushed Interior
A chamber in a mausoleum used to safeguard casketed human remains

- The top of a metal air seal burial vault which entraps air as it is put in position; it also supports the weight of the earth above

As related to animals, one that has been tamed and disciplined by human beings for personal companionship
Domesticated
- A method of closure that utilizes the principle of the air seal in conjunction with an epoxy material at the junction of the dome and the base of a metal burial vault
Double Seal
- The part of the casket handle attached to the casket body
Ear (Lug)
- A casket having ends in the shape of a half circle
Elliptic
- Material having designs raised above the surface; frequently seen on cloth covered caskets
Embossed
A range of derivative wood products, which are manufactured by binding together wood strands, particles, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form composite materials. Sometimes referred to as composite wood or manufactured wood products
Engineered Wood
Eco-friendly approach that utilizes products, services and merchandise that are free of toxic/hazardous materials, are biodegradable or that minimize use of energy
Environmentally friendly (green, natural)
- An inscription placed on a monument to commemorate the deeds or qualities of the deceased
Epitaph
Wood that has been shredded into spaghetti-like strings
Excelsior (wood wool)
An agreement whereby a purchaser agrees to purchase goods or services from one seller, exclusive of all others, in exchange for a reduction in the per-unit cost for such goods or services
Exclusivity Discount
- The portion of the casket interior which extends over the top of the body molding (body ledge) for aesthetic value
Extendover
- Any metal formed from iron (steel or stainless steel)
Ferrous Metal
A material consisting of extremely fine filaments of glass embedded in various resins
Fiberglass
- The wedge-shaped portion of the cap (lid) at each end of a casket
Fishtail (pie)
- Pricing method in which the same dollar amount is added to the wholesale cost of merchandise
Fixed Dollar Amount
- Pricing method whereby the casket cost is multiplied by a constant factor
Fixed Multiple
- A casket shell design in which the sides and ends of the casket body flare out from the bottom to the top; a casket shell design that is narrower and shorter at the bottom than at the top
Flaring Square
- A finish used on casket exteriors free of gloss; a dull, lusterless surface
Flat Finish
Matte Finish
- The illumination produced by a tubular electric discharge lamp; the fluorescence of phosphors coating the inside of a tube
Fluorescent Lighting
A headstone which is set parallel with the surrounding terrain
Flush Marker
- A strip of metal, plastic, or cloth that is attached to the inside of the panel, covering the area at which point the roll (cove) is anchored
Fold
Gimp
A component part of the casket interior, which is inside the foot cap
Foot Panel
- Use of portions of caskets in the selection room vs full sized caskets
Fractional Display
- A cap opening style in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed with a transverse cut in the cap, thereby forming a one piece lid for the casket
Full Couch
- A method of price quotation in which the charges are broken down into several major component parts such as professional services, facilities, automobile and merchandise
Functional Pricing
A service commemorating the deceased with the body present
Funeral Ceremony
- Steel that has been coated with zinc for increased resistance to rust
Galvanized
The channel found on the foot panel header of a half couch casket
Gasket Channel
- A thickness measurements of metals
Gauge
A pricing method where the mark up varies
Graduated Recovery
An excavation in the earth as a place for interment
Grave
An outer enclosure consisting of a body and a one or two piece lid
Grave Box
An outer enclosure, which offers protection from the earth load but without protection from the elements
Grave Liner
A ceremony commemorating the deceased at the place of final disposition
Graveside Service
- A cap opening style in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed with a transverse cut in the cap, thereby forming a two piece lid for the casket
Half Couch
A high intensity light source that produces a white light approximating natural daylight
Halogen Lighting
- A sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentations in the metal (as if struck by a ballpeen hammer); the indentations are in the paint and appear as the paint dries
Hammertone Finish
The handles, ornamental fixtures, and associated fittings attached to the casket shell
Hardware
- Any tough, heavy timber with a compact texture; any deciduous tree (any tree that loses its leaves annually)
Hardwood
The turned under edge or horizontal portion of the header of the casket cap
Header Flange
A component part of the casket interior which is inside the head portion of the cap; no distinction is made between the head panel and foot panel in full couch caskets
Head Panel
- Airtight; impervious to external influence; completely sealed by fusion or soldering
Hermetically sealed
A smooth, burnished, and polished finish used on casket exteriors; created by rubbing and polishing the surface to a finished or refined state
High Gloss Finish
That portion of the casket interior covering the hinges that attach the casket cap to the casket body; usually extends from the roll and becomes a part of the body lining

- A type of cemetery monument in which the die is wider than it is tall
Horizontal Tablet
Disposition of human remains by burial without formal viewing, visitation, or ceremony except for a graveside service

- The illumination resulting from the glowing of a heated filament

Indirect Lighting
- The method of selling merchandise whereby the funeral director does not stay in the selection room during the selection process

- The method of price quotation by which each unit of goods and services is priced separately
Itemization
Hardware used to prop and hold a casket cap opening for viewing
Knee Brace
The process of bonding superimposed layers of different materials
Laminate
Grave space where two or more persons may be buried in grave liners, which have been stacked one on top of the other with the first person who dies being buried in the deepest grave liner
Lawn Crypt
A grave marker set parallel to the ground that covers a grave completely
Ledger
Light emitting diode lighting; a semiconductor device that convers electricity into light; noted for its high energy savings and long lasting durability
LED Lighting
A fabric made from flax; noted for its strength, coolness, and luster
Linen
- A subdivision of a cemetery which consists of several graves or interment spaces
Lot
An object, usually of one piece, used to identify individual graves
Marker
- The difference between the cost of goods sold and the selling price
Markup
- Pressed paper in sheet form; used in casket construction as a backing (upholstery) material
Masselin
Interior cloth or material that covers the mattress or bedding of the casket
Mattress Cover
An above ground structure or building containing crypts or vaults for entombment of caskets; may also include niches for cremated remains
Mausoleum
A value in an ordered set of values which represents the midpoint, whereby there are an equal number of values above and below the midpoint value
Median
A physical object designed for the purpose of remembering an individual, group, or event
memorial
A scheduled assembly of family and friends following a death without the deceased present
Memorial Gathering
A cemetery or section of a cemetery with only flush to the ground type markers
Memorial Park
A ceremony commemorating the deceased without the body present
Memorial Service
The purchasing, pricing, display, and sale of goods and services
Merchandising
A gasketed container, which can be used as an insert in a casket or as a separate shipping container

Mode

Thin sheets of wood glued together so the grains are at right angles to one another; an odd number of sheets will be used so the grain on the front and back will always run the same direction
Plywood
A smooth, glass-like appearance for stone monuments and markers achieved by running rough to fine grit diamond polishing wheels over the surface. The sun will often reflect of a polished granite surface
Polished
A compound, similar in appearance to plastic, that has a high molecular weight creating an extremely durable substance
Polymer
A leak resistant zippered bag designed to contain a dead human body and body fluids and is used mainly for the removal of dead human remains from the place of death
Pouch
A casket opening style in which the cap or lid at the head of the casket is completely removed for the purpose of viewing; the remains may be viewed from either side of the casket

- A subdivision of a cemetery containing several blocks

Semi Gloss Finish
- A combination of a tailored interior with one or more other styles of interior for effect
Semi Tailored Interior
The basic exterior of a casket, including the cap (lid) upper portion and body lower portion
Shell
- A style of casket interior in which the material is drawn or gathered in parallel fashion in a multiple needle head sewing process
Shirred Interior
A cloth or garment in which human remains are wrapped for burial
Shroud
- A casket in which the cap is in two pieces. The rim (ogee) and foot panel is one piece, hinged to the top body molding; and the head panel is the second piece, hinged to the rim (ogee)
Single Hinged panel
A cemetery marker that has a face that has an angle greater than 45 degrees but less than 90 degrees in relationship to the terrain
Slant Marker
- Wood from cone bearing or coniferous trees
Softwood
Raw material used to manufacture products entirely from natural wood pieces that contain no wood by products or composite wood derivatives
Solid Wood
- A rust resistant metal alloy of steel, chromium, and sometimes nickel
Stainless Steel
A hardware production method whereby the casket hardware sections are pressed out on a hydraulic press
Stamped Hardware
- Casket in which the body panels are at a 90 degree angle to the bottom and the corners form 90 degree angles

Stationary Bar
- Metal alloy consisting mainly of iron and carbon; used in caskets it is low in carbon which keeps it soft (mild) and malleable; commercial steel contains carbon in an amount up to 1.7% as an essential alloying constituent. May be referred to as carbon steel based upon the percentage of carbon in the alloy
Steel
Elongated indentations that are pressed into the casket bottom and help to strengthen the casket shell
Stiffeners
- The miscellaneous items provided or used to complement the services of a funeral director, i.e. register books, acknowledgement cards, memorial folders/programs, religious paraphernalia, flag case, etc

- A moveable casket handle with a hinged arm
Swing Bar
- A tightly drawn casket interior style
Tailored Interior
A screw type fastener
Threaded Fastener
- The decorative or ornamental part of the casket handle that covers the exposed ends of the bar
Tip
- A method of closure that utilizes an epoxy compound in conjunction with tongue ingroove construction at the top edge and the lid of the vault
Top Seal
An enclosure used for the protection of human remains during transportation
Transfer Container
A rubber gasket that seals the space between the head and foot caps on a split cap or half couch metal casket
Transverse Gasket
- A style of casket interior created by placing a padding material between a lining material and a backing material, with subsequent stitches taken, forming small raised puffs

- A method of price quotation in which one price includes both service and casket

Urn
A casket design in which the body panels display the shape of an urn
Urnside
An outer enclosure which supports earth load and offers limited protection from most outside elements
Vault
