What is PI Planning
- Program Incement Planning
- Time dedicated to planning the feature work that will be completed over the next 8-12 weeks
What is the Program Backlog?
- The holding area for upcoming features
- Contains user stories
- Contains enabler stories
What is an enabler/enabler story?
A story that provides the code, components, and technical infrastructure needed to implement user stories
What is a user story?
A story that describes a feature from the user’s perspective, including why the user needs the feature and how the user intends to use it
What is Architectural Runway?
The existing code, components, and technical infrastructure needed to implement the near-term features represented in the highest value user stories
What is the IP Iteration?
- IP (Innovation and Planning)
- Same length as a standard Iteration
- Occurs ever program increment (8-12 weeks)
- Acts as an estimating buffer for meeting PI Objectives
- Provides dedicated time for innovation, continuing-ed, PI Planning and I&A events
What is I&A?
- I&A (Inspect & Adapt)
- Is a review and retrospective on the most recently completed Program Increment
- Current state of system is demo-ed
- Includes a Problem Solving workshop
What is a PI?
- PI (Program Increment)
- A bundle of Iterations
- Usually structured as 4 development Iterations followed by an IP Iteration
What is the Program Board?
- An output of PI Planning
- A roadmap of the upcoming Program Increment
- Contains new feature delivery dates (by Iteration) over a Program Increment
- Highlights feature dependencies between teams
- Highlights relevant milestones
What are PI Objectives?
- An output of PI Planning
- SMART objectives created by each team with a business value assigned by Business Owners
What is a Business Owner?
- Program level
- A stakeholder with primary business/technical responsibility for the following as they relate to any Solution produced by the ART:
- governance
- compliance
- ROI (return on investment)
What is an Epic Owner?
- Portfolio level
- Coordinates portfolio epics
- Defines epic
- Defines epic’s MVP
- Defines Lean business use case
- Facilitates implementation
What is an Enterprise Architect?
- Portfolio level
- Responsible for establishing the technology strategy and roadmap that enables a portfolio to support current and future capabilities
What is a System Architect/Engineer?
- ART level
- Responsible for defining the shared technical and architectual vision for an ART
What is Product Management?
- Program level
The area responsible for defining and supporting the building of products that meet customer needs over the product-market lifecycle.
