Glomerular Disease Flashcards
Glomerulus?
Capillary network that sits in the Bowmans capsule
2 main functions of the glomerulus?
Ultrafiltration and reabsorption
What occurs if you have increased permeability?
increased urine ouput; more components filtered out
What occurs if you have decreased permeability?
decreased urine output; fluid retention
List the 5 categories that the glomerular disease is divided into.
- Acute nephritic syndrome
- Nephrotic syndrome
- asymptomatic proteinuria and hematuria
- acute glomerulonephritis
- chronic glomerulonenephritis
Acute nephritic syndrome?
Decrease in GFR -> retain fluids (H2O and electrolytes) & nitrogenous wastes
- results in very serious complications: azotemia, HTN, edema
Nephrotic syndromes?
- Increased GFR -> lose components in the urine that should not be excreted (proteins, cells)
- Proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia (deficiency of albumin, which is protein lost in the urine)
- Hyperlipidemia r/t liver responding to hypoalbuminemia by producing more proteins, and at the same time producing more LDLs as well -> lipiduria
Asymptomatic Proteinuria and Hematuria?
asymptomatic in terms of obvious renal damage -> no impairment of kidney function (GFR is normal). Far less proteinuria than seen in nephrotic syndromes (less severe)
Which type of hypersensitivity occurs in glomerular disease.
type 3 hypersensitivity
