Q

List the 5 categories that the glomerular disease is divided into.

A
  1. Acute nephritic syndrome
  2. Nephrotic syndrome
  3. asymptomatic proteinuria and hematuria
  4. acute glomerulonephritis
  5. chronic glomerulonenephritis

Q

Acute nephritic syndrome?

A

Decrease in GFR -> retain fluids (H2O and electrolytes) & nitrogenous wastes
- results in very serious complications: azotemia, HTN, edema

Q

Nephrotic syndromes?

A
  • Increased GFR -> lose components in the urine that should not be excreted (proteins, cells)
  • Proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia (deficiency of albumin, which is protein lost in the urine)
  • Hyperlipidemia r/t liver responding to hypoalbuminemia by producing more proteins, and at the same time producing more LDLs as well -> lipiduria

Q

Asymptomatic Proteinuria and Hematuria?

A

asymptomatic in terms of obvious renal damage -> no impairment of kidney function (GFR is normal). Far less proteinuria than seen in nephrotic syndromes (less severe)
