- Not ruled by a centralized government
- When they reach a certain size they evolve into kingdoms resulting into a centralized government
What is physical expansion?
Can occur in terms of population growth or territorial expansion and is relatively easy to track. (Ex; American or Russian colonial expansion, China or India’s population growth)
What is a population graph?
A popular method for measuring human expansion. (Population sizes, birth and death rates, and the changes displayed through different graphs)

The making of Typographic Man the global village uses technological advances to compress space, thereby allowing people of different cultures and geographic locale to interact and share ideas. The upside of this is that it could lead to greater understanding, equity, and shared information, while the downside is that it could increase cultural hegemony. (Lessening cultural variation)
What is hegemony?
Leadership or dominance, especially by one country or social group over others.
What happens as technology expands?
Opportunity to share culture, traditions and views also expand.
What was Noam Chomsky’s argument surrounding hegemony?
He argued that hegemony was a stagnating situation that could destroy societies. Basically, societies would no longer seek alternative viewpoints, ideas, traditions or peoples.
What did Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci argue surrounding cultural hegemony?
He argued that cultural hegemony involves having a diverse culture be ruled or dominated by one group or class.

Wealth is becoming increasingly concentrated within nations, while developing nations remain poor.
