Global systems Flashcards
What are the 4 spheres of the earth:
atmosphere
biosphere
lithosphere
hydrosphere
What is the carbon cycle? What are its processes?
The carbon cycle reveals how carbon moves between various locations on earth.\
1) CO2 exists in the atmosphere
2) CO2 is dissolved in oceans or is absorbed by plants and algae
3) Plants convert CO2 into carbohydrates during photosynthesis which becomes part of the biosphere
- consumed by
What is the water cycle?
What are its processes?
The water cycle is the process of how water transfers through the Earths spheres.
1) evaporation
2) condensation
3) Precipitation
4)travel back to water stores through many ways such as
- Surface run off
- Infiltration
- Percolation and surface flow
Name 3 fossil fuels and how they form.
1) coal - made of the remain of ancient plants
2) oil - forms from the remains of tiny marine organisms like plankton and algae
3) Natural Gas- from the same decomposed marine organisms.
List 3 greenhouse gasses
Carbon Dioxide:
Carbon + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide
Methane:
Carbon + Hydrogen → Methane
Nitrous Oxide:
Nitrogen + Oxygen → Nitrous Oxide
Differences between greenhouse gasses and enhanced greenhouse gasses.
- greenhouse gasses are naturally occurring gasses and they help maintain the Earths temperature
- enhances greenhouse gasses are increased levels of these same gases due to human activities, like burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes. Main cause of climate change as it adds on more heat to the earths atmosphere
What is the chemical formula for ozone?
O3
Effects of climate change/ evidence
- melting of ice glaciers
- rising of sea levels
- rising global temperatures
- ocean acidification
- extreme weather events
