Compounds Flashcards
what is a compound
a substance made of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded. For example, water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen.
What are the two main types of compounds?
Covalent
Iconic
What is a covalent compound
are formed when two or more non-metal elements share electrons
What is an iconic compound
are formed when a metal element gives or takes electrons from a non-metal element
What is a combustion reaction?
A reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen. This reaction releases light and heat energy.
What is a fuel?
a substance that undergoes a chemical reaction to produce a large amount of useful energy.
What is the name of a positive metal ion?
Cation
What is the name of a negative metal ion?
Anion
What is a precipitation?
reactions that involve the formation of an insoluble salt from a reaction between two aquious solutions.
What is a precipitation reaction?
Are double-replacement reactions; the cations and the anions switch partners.
what is the result of a reaction between acid and metal (general formula)
salt + hydrogen gas
What is a PH
The measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. the higher the ph the less acidic it is.
What is decomposition?
One compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
What is synthesis?
Two or more substances combine into a more complex substance.
What is rate of reaction?
the difference in reactivity drives the rate of reaction (more reactive metals react faster)
