What happened at the Berlin 1939 Olympics?

A

THIRD REICH IDEOLOGY
The games were used by Hitler and the Nazi party as a stage for political propaganda for the Third Reich.
German athletes trained full time, undermining the amateur ideal of the Games.
Hitler refused to place a gold medal around Jesse Owens (African-American) after he beat the German athlete Luz Long in the long jump

What happened at the Mexico City 1968 Olympics?

A

BLACK POWER DEMONSTRATION
South Africa’s invitation to the Games was withdrawn because of other countries threatening to boycott the games because of South Africa’s apartheid regime.
At the time black American’s lacked equal opportunities.
In the 200m final Tommie Smith won gold and John Carlos took the bronze.
When they climbed onto the podium Smith was wearing a black glove on his right hand to represent black power in America and Carlos on his left to represent black power and unity in America.
They wore black socks and no shows which represented black poverty.

What happened at Munich 1972 Olympics?

A

PALESTINIAN TERRORISM
8 Palestinian terrorists entered the Olympic village and seized 11 members of the Israeli teams.
The terrorists wanted 234 Palestinian prisoners released that were held in Israel.
German authorities attempted a rescue, but it failed. All hostages and 5 terrorists were killed.
The Palestinian terrorists were known as the ‘Black September Group’.
The IOC decided that the games would go on.
The Olympic Flag was raised at half mast.

What happened at the Moscow 1980 Olympics?

A

BOYCOTT LED BY THE USA
In December 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan which created a conflict that would last 10 years and extended the Cold War.
The USA boycotted the games, alongside the British hockey, fencing and equestrian teams.
10,000 athletes were expected to come but only 6000 turned up.

What happened at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics?

A

BOYCOTT LED BY THE SOVIET UNION
In response to the event of the 1980 games, the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and Cuba announced they would boycott the 1984 games.
A total of 14 nations refused to take parr.
The Soviet Union blamed the commercialisation of the Games and the lack of security measures.
