Global sense of place Flashcards
Why is it important to have a global sense of place
Places are dynamic, with multiple identities and have no boundaries, because they are constantly being changed by the wider world. To try and fully understand one place, you can link it with a place beyond.
what is globalisation
The increased integration of global economies, societies and cultures, making the world a more accessible place
How does globalisation change a place
- Creates clone towns (placelessness) as everywhere has the same shops
- Opens up places to new ideas and provides new ventures
Give an example of a place trying to tackle clone towns
Totnes, South Devon
Explain the story of Totnes
2012 a costa tried to open in Totnes. There were 42 places that already sold coffee so 75% of the population signed an online petition to halt it from opening. A further 300 people wrote to the council. They did this because Totnes is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and they didn’t want it to become a clone town, despite having a Superdrug and WHSmith
How have global companies adapted to avoid being outcast
Glocalisation
What is glocalisation
When companies adapt to a local market place to appeal to the consumer market
Give an example of glocalisation
McDonald’s have many different special menu items depending on the country they are in such as the McArabia flatbread chicken served in Saudi Arabia
